If you haven’t, I’ll give you a link in a moment and you can read the story yourself. It’s inspiring.
The story is about a homeless guy named Leo that lives in NYC. While down on his luck, Leo was approached by a young programmer (coder) in mid-August. Leo was given a choice by this programmer: Take $100, or take an opportunity to learn how to write software code.
Leo saw the opportunity in this generous offer and opted for the coding lessons. So for 1 hour every weekday for 16 weeks, Leo and his coding instructor met in a park for instruction. The coder bought Leo a used Chromebook computer and 3 used books from Amazon. That and motivation is all that Leo needed.
Today, Leo has now written and released a mobile app that he sells at iTunes and Google Play. All the money that the app generates will go to Leo to help him further his programming education. You can read his story here.
So by now you’re probably asking yourself “why” I find this story significant. I find the story significant for 3 reasons:
#1) Teach a man to fish, and he’ll feed himself for a lifetime.
Leo saw the opportunity to change his misfortune by improving his skills.
As you look at your business, look at your skills. How can you improve? What could you do better that would help you earn more income in your business? Is it learning what to say to people? Is it the follow-up? Is it learning how to ask for the order? What is it?
Take time to identify those skills and put a plan together to address them. You can always improve. It’s like what I tell users about prospecting leads; the better you get at prospecting leads, the better the leads get for you.
#2) Anything is possible through determination and consistent work.
If a homeless guy with no previous experience can make it work despite his current situation, imagine what you can do with your situation.
Sure we all have situations in our life that want to hold us back. But you have to focus on the end result and work everyday to get to your end goals. Don’t let your current situation hold you back. Don’t let it give you an excuse for not achieving your goals and dreams.
#3) Mobile apps are the future.
Mobile apps are the new Internet. If mobile is not in your marketing plan for 2014, you’re going to get left behind.
A number of clients that I’ve talked to have said “I don’t even own a smartphone. I don’t know how to use one.” My response is always..
“Go buy one and figure it out!”
You figured out a computer. You should have no problem figuring out a smartphone.
Everyday this holiday season, retailers are putting smartphones on sale. This week, you can pick up a iPhone for only $27 at Walmart. So the bottom line is that there is absolutely no reason NOT to own a smartphone.
Smartphones and mobile devices are the new Internet. If you’re not figuring out how to use them in your marketing, you’re sure to become antiquated. I don’t care if you’re an Internet marketer or a person that markets “belly to belly”, it still holds true that mobile marketing is your future. So again, if you don’t have a smartphone, go get one.
2014 is the year you’ll see more and more mobile apps that will assist you in your marketing and prospecting.
