Paul: There are different degrees of HTML.
In the very, very beginning, I would have sent you very beautifully organized emails that had borders on them and pictures and all kinds of stuff. Those emails are definitely getting blocked more and more these days. They’re landing in the junk folder.
So I tend to use HTML for the tracking features but I try and use as little bold as possible when sending email to my mlm lead list. I bold a few things in the email just to keep their eyes moving and looking towards the key things that I want them to read but I don’t put anything in red. I don’t put any large fonts and the email. It is an HTML email but for all intents purposes it’s almost a plain text message.
Enrique: So it looks like a plain text message but it is an HTML email message that allows you to put tracking codes in the message. Is that correct?
Paul: Yes that’s correct.

What do you find to work in terms of day of the week that responds the best for you?

Paul: I think that Monday’s are good. I might shoot out an email on Sunday so that they can receive the email in their inbox on Monday morning. That’s when people on my email lead list seem the freshest. And then I’ll hit them again on Wednesday night. If I do send out a third email that week, it would be on a Saturday morning.
I don’t know what program you’re using on your computer… it might be set for sending every other day.
I think it’s more about when it’s convenient for people to read their email. I’m always surprised when I see open emails at 3:00 or 4:00 in the morning.
People have their own schedules these days. Things are a lot different than they used to be. People used to work from 9 to 5 Monday through Friday. And now some people work weekends and take weekdays off.
To be honest with you, it has changed a lot. I used to call my mlm lead list between 7 and 9 at night. That was because it was the best time to get a hold of people. And now I find that it’s just as easy to get a hold of people from one to three in the afternoon as you can from 7 to 9. So a lot of things have changed in terms of the best time to email or call people.
I definitely agree that Friday is the worst day of the week to send an email out. But it’s more important about when a person has time to check their email.
The main thing is that you’re constantly staying in touch with your mlm leads a couple two or three times a week.

Enrique: Hello everyone. This is Enrique Garibay of MLMLeads.com and DeskPing.com. Today we have an interview with Mr. Paul Kroto.

For those of you who do not know Paul, this gentleman has been in the industry 11 years now. He works from home. He is a college graduate and had aspirations of working in the NFL. And when I say “NFL”, I don’t mean “No Friends Left”. I’m talking about the National Football league. Paul saw that perhaps his career would not take him into the NFL. Paul figured out how to make money from home and he has done that successfully for the last 11 years primarily using autoresponder leads.
In Paul’s last business opportunity, Paul hit the $1 million mark in annual sales for his organization.
So Paul Kroto, are you there?
Paul: Yes I am.
Enrique: Welcome to the call Paul.
Paul: Thank you. It’s great to be here.
Enrique: Paul, the topic today is email marketing and how to use an mlm email lead or autoresponder lead to build your business opportunity… I’m talking about taking MLM Email Leads or autoresponder leads and working those leads via email to build a home-based business.
Paul, you and I have known each other how many years now? Six of seven years now?
Paul: Back in 2001 is when we first met.
Enrique: Back in 2001 Paul, you were a customer of mine at Proautoresponder.com. And as I recall Paul, you were one of the top email senders at that time. Is that true about you?
Paul: Yes I was. I actually did not get started on the Internet into the year 2001. So you could say I am a late bloomer. I made it through six years of college and was on a computer for a term papers and the like. But I was never on the Internet or even sent an e-mail until the year 2000. And by the year 2001, I pretty much became the king of the Internet as far as learning how to market to people.
Enrique: Absolutely.
Paul let’s take folks back a little bit earlier. I mentioned that you were a college graduate and that you had aspirations of becoming part of the NFL. Tell folks at little bit about that. Tell us where that experience lead you and how you were introduced to making money from home in network marketing.
Paul: Sure no problem.
It goes all the way back to high school. A coach named Rusty Jones of the Buffalo Bills - and I’m from Buffalo - he came to my high school and gave a presentation. When I saw his presentation on how to eat right, lift weights and exercise, I immediately knew what I wanted to do with the rest of my life. I wanted to become Rusty Jones.
I went to him and asked what he did. I ended up going to the University of Colorado for six years and receive my master’s degree in nutrition and exercise physiology. I became a strength and conditioning coach and had all the certificates that I needed and the degrees that I needed. But I did not have the social contacts. You really have to know someone. There were 20,000 applicants for different college jobs out there. You really have to start in the college ranks and then move up to the NFL. There are only 32 NFL teams out there so there are all these people with dreams to be a strength and conditioning coach for one of these professional teams but only 32 job openings.
So I learned at an early age you have to look for a profession where there are no limitations on how many people can make it to the top. Whereas we know that in the multi-level marketing industry, there can be any number many people at the top. There’s no limit. If the top level in your company is executive diamond or whatever, there can be hundreds or even thousands of other people making that same level of income. There’s nothing holding you back from achieving your dreams in this industry.
Enrique: You saw that the NFL was not in your cards. Where did that take you from there? What job did you take?
Paul: I ended up becoming a personal trainer in a health club. I was making about $25,000 a year. I was personal training people who were making $25,000 a month. I had a high and clientele and I was doing their nutrition for them. What I realized by spending time with these people… the common denominator was that they all owned their own business. And I was just an employee.
Enrique: You were trading time for money?
Paul: Exactly.

Paul: Oh yes. The follow-up and people’s mentalities have not changed at all. It’s more important today than ever because more and more people are hitting “delete”. They kinda look through the email inbox real quick and don’t pay attention to every email that they get.
I think I send out at least two dozen emails to a person. In the beginning I’ll do that every week, then I’ll do it every other day for a while … then every fourth day for a while … then every seventh day. Then I really spread it out over 14 days then maybe once a month.
But I want to keep me in their mind. I believe that everyone’s life changes every 90 days. You might just catch them five or six months from now. And they’ll think … you know what? This guy has been it emailing me for months now. He must be pretty organized. I just got in a fight with my boss or I just lost my job or things are going the way I want them… Maybe I should call this guy and check this out and see what it’s all about.

Paul: No: There are different levels of service. You can contact your local Internet Service provider and open up a business account.
I’m sure you can check with your local ISP or whoever you have your local Internet access through. They should have something called a “business” account where it is setup where you can buy your own domain name. For instance, when I send out emails, it’s not from Verizon.net. I actually get to pick my own domain name so it comes from paul at my own domain name dot com so check with your local service provider and ask if you can create a business account. They might offer a web space with that and higher speed Internet connection. One of the features would be personalized e-mail accounts.
They might have a limit of 100,000 emails a day or something like that. The one I have it is absolutely an unlimited e-mail account. Of course you still have to follow the Can-Spam laws and those types of things. But there is no restriction on the amount of the email you can send out on the business level account. .

Enrique: So you’re able to push out a large volume of email just from your desktop. And what you’re saying is you found it to be true that if you can send it from your desktop, you’re going to get better deliverability then if you went with a bulk autoresponder service. Is that true?
Paul: You can get up in the 80 to 90 percent deliverability when sending from your desktop because it’s just like sending a regular email to one of your friends. So eight times of 10 if you send an e-mail to one of your friends it’s going to go through. Maybe one time it wouldn’t because maybe their mailbox is full or bad e-mail address or it might see that you’re sending out of lot of the emails at one time or something like that. Eight or nine times at of 10 it will get through now.

That way the email is coming from an e-mail address like your local e-mail address from your local ISP like Verizon.net.

Verizon is not considered a bulk autoresponder. My own home or my own e-mail address is not considered a bulk autoresponder. So if you are personally emailing these people yourself, it’s not going to get blocked as long as what you put in the email does not have any key words in it that may be filtered out by the spam filters.
So using WorldMerge and personalized emails, you can still send out a lot of the emails at one time straight from your own desktop using the program. That’s what I’m currently doing.

There are some key things that they’re looking for like… Is it coming from a bulk autoresponder?
So they’re able to sense whether it was coming from system like your old autoresponder service. They could sense that the immediately. So it really didn’t matter how good the emails written towards the end. In the beginning it was working fine. But towards the end, it didn’t matter how good your emails were written or whether they had pictures in them … It didn’t matter how good the email was, it wasn’t getting through because they were sensing that it was coming from an autoresponder.
Basically anyone trying to use an autoresponder to send emails these days is going to fall flat on their face because ISPs like Yahoo.com and AOL.com can sense that it’s coming from a bulk autoresponder service and that immediately gets it flagged and put into a bulk folder.

Enrique: Let’s talk a little bit about email marketing itself. You have obviously sent out a lot of email to your mlm lead lists. Paul: That’s all I do.
I was in the military after college. I became very military-minded in that I had to know every single thing that was going on. So I keep track of open rates, click rates, tour rates and signup rates and all those numbers.
I see where the weak link is so we can see how we can tweak things. It’s funny… if I could write a book on how to do it, I would. But it’s more of an art. You try something and you think it’s gonna work and it doesn’t. It it doesn’t work all. And then something that you thought had no shot at working, ends up working the best.

I do have some things that I have come across that are great rules to follow. It is an art though. You have to keep tracking things and tweaking things and watch things because they will change.
There are a lot of different spam filters out there that are looking for good honest people like us that do have a good optin list who are sincere about helping other people. Even if you send an email letter to your friend, and you mention a few key words in there that a certain ISP doesn’t like, they’ll blocked your email.
So it is always a game trying to keep your email plain and make sure that it gets delivered.
Deliverability is absolutely the number one goal when it comes to email marketing. Make sure that email gets from you to them … that’s the only goal that you should really have in your mind in the beginning.

Enrique: So you were bringing and 100+ people a month from your mlm lead list. And now you talk about follow-up. Were you able to follow up with 100+ people a month and help them get their business started? How did that work out for you?

If you want to know what NOT to do, I am the person to come talk to.
Do NOT signup 125 people a month because there is no way you can train them and get them to do what you did. And I didn’t understand that part of network marketing. I did not understand that duplication is the key.
If you turn this into a selling game, you’re going to lose your shirt.
I was actually the top income earner in the company, and I basically quit the day after New Year’s. I quit because I was making at lot of money but I also saw that my people were not making a lot of money. A lot of people were quitting. So it was basically a churn and burn situation. I was signing on so many members but I was giving no personal support. I wasn’t talking to anyone. I wasn’t talking to my prospects or my new members because I was so busy with the email part of things. I was just letting things go on “autopilot” thinking that I didn’t have to build a relationship with that person.

My relationship with them was only through email and that was so wrong in my thinking back then. Boy did I learn an expensive lesson but as times change, you understand that.
It’s great to have a great sorting system like an autoresponder and website but it all comes back to “high touch”. You have to be in touch with people and build a relationship with people. That’s what this whole industry about.

Paul: Yes, it was to go to my website and fill out the splash landing page. It was a page that talked about making $2,000 to $5,000 a month. It had lifestyle pictures on it and instructed the visitor to fill out the form so that we could give them more information.
Enrique: Once a person filled out the form and hit submit, what was the experience for the person thereafter?
Paul: That was the great part. That was the part that I loved.
Once they filled out the form, they were actually taken out of one autoresponder campaign - we call a series of the emails a campaign. the first campaign was to get them to go to the site. Once we got them to go to the site and fill out the form, we removed them from one campaign and added them to a new campaign. The second campaign was called “people that took a tour”.
There would be another 20 emails in that campaign that would say “thank you for touring … here is why you should upgrade”. We would then give them reasons why they should upgrade. We would then send them back to the website. Most people would not look through the whole website at tone time. There might be five or six pages to a website. A lot of people would just look at one or two pages the first time. Then you have to tell them to go back to finish the tour.
It would take literally three to six months to see the results from the campaign. This is not something that happens overnight. You have to build a relationship with your mlm lead prospects. It takes awhile to click on email and actually take a tour and think about it. They might do it when they get another email. Then they say to themselves “I’ll definitely do it”. Then they forget about it. So it is not an overnight process. But we understood that. That’s why there were so many emails spread out over a six month period. We knew that some time over those six months that if we followed up with them enough times that we would get them to order.

In previous times we were making all those phone calls to mlm lead lists. It was hard to keep things organized. Paul: We get the list from you and then loaded the list into an autoresponder which was the one you owned.
Then basically had a series of the emails preprogrammed so that as soon as you loaded the list, there was an e-mail sent for day one. It would say something like … I understand you’re interested in a home-based business … if you are, please click on this link below…. That link took him to my website. It was a simple e-mail that we would send out to people.
And then we would know that the majority of people would just delete it. Hence the power of the autoresponder was to send a second email a couple of days later. So we would send an email every two or three days to this person. We knew that it would take literally two dozen emails to get them to open up maybe one of them. But knowing that and the numbers that it would take, we created 24 different subject lines and 24 different email body messages. And we knew that one of them would hit each person in a different way. There was no one email that magically works. You have to have a bunch of different emails the hit people differently.
We would create one email specifically to those people that had kids. It was like … get your kids out of day care and spend more time with your children. We had another one that we geared more towards professionals. Every email kind of had a different angle on. And we knew that if we sent out of the emails to a particular person, one of them had to hit them in the right way. And they would click on that link and take the tour.
